By Aggrey Mugisha Nearly 100 people are reported dead and more than 300 missing in Nameti village, Bududa district, in eastern Uganda following massive landslides. Nameti Health Centre was buried by the landslides, killing two health workers and some patients. World Vision Uganda does not work in the area, but in neighbouring Butaleja, an hour’s drive away. Although World Vision does not work in the affected area, it is monitoring the situation and is in communication with other agencies and government that are already intervening. "This is an unfortunate incident. We are closely monitoring the situation to see how we can best support the intervention," said Hugh Greathead, World Vision Uganda’s director for humanitarian emergency affairs. More than 5,000 households and some schools in 23 parishes have been affected. Nameti and other areas surrounding Mount Elgon have always been prone to landslides, especially in times of heavy rains. Some parts of Uganda have been experiencing torrential rains for the past three weeks, and there are fears of possible flooding in some areas like Butaleja, where World Vision operates. World Vision's operations manager Sam Tukei, visited the affected area and says the area affected is the size of about three football (soccer) fields. He described the effects of the landslides as devastating, but localised. Comments (0)
