World Vision is an independent and private Christian humanitarian organization currently working in 24 countries in Africa and another 72 globally to make a significant and sustainable impact on poverty and its causes, with a special concern for children.
Since 1950, we have aided millions of children and families by providing emergency assistance to those affected by natural disasters and conflicts, developing long-term solutions within communities to alleviate poverty, and advocating for justice on their behalf.
World Vision’s operations in Africa currently encompass 583 long-term sustainable community development projects, benefiting more than 6,000 communities and some 1. 6 million sponsored children. These projects are focused on meeting needs identified by the communities themselves, like clean water, education, health care, agricultural improvements and sanitation. In addition, several short-term emergency relief programmes are providing food, shelter and medical care to the victims of natural or man-made disasters throughout Africa. As communities recover from disasters, these programmes often transition into development activities that can address more systemic and comprehensive needs.
Running through all of our development and relief activities is a commitment to advocacy at two levels: changing policies and empowering people to work for change.
